We've had some requests for a list of acronyms and adoption related terms, so here you go. If there's anything you think could be clarified better or think is missing, please let us know.
Adoptee Lite - You lived with your bio mother or father but were adopted by the the other parent
adoption registry - some governments have set up registries for adoptees to get information about their bio families and vice versa. They often take a long time and sometimes have fee involved.
AP/APs - adoptive parents
Baby Scoop Era aka BSE - A period of several decades from around the late 1940s to the late 1970s where it was very common for young women to be sent away from home to hide their pregnancies and forced to give up their babies for adoption
B-mom/Bmom - Birth Mom. This is preferable to bm/BM
crib mate term adoptees sometimes use to refer to fellow adoptees
de-fogging - the complex and hard to explain process of realizing the harmful effects of adoption in your life. Can also refer to realizing how adoption industry language obscures and whitewashes the process they engage in of separating mothers from their children
DH - dear/darling (or damn, depending on your mood) husband
Disrupted adoption -- the child is re-homed prior to adoption finalization, also sometimes occurs after the adoption is finalized. Can also be used by potential adoptive parents to refer to mothers keeping their children.
Dissolved adoption -- the child is re-homed after adoption finalization
DD - dear/darling daughter
DS - dear/darling son
DW - dear/darling wife
gotcha day - a day for adoptive families to celebrate the adoptee joining them, either physically or legally. Usually considered very negative and, at best, inconsiderate by adult adoptees.
GSA - Genetic Sexual Attraction - A known issue with adoptees reuniting with biological family
LDA - Late Discovery Adoptee - people who discovered they were adopted later in life, usually refers to those who found out as adults
NAM - Narcissistic A-Mom
non-identifying information - information adoptees can frequently get from private adoption agencies or the government that gives information about your bio mother and sometimes your bio father or other relatives. This information is meant to avoid telling adoptees anything that can help them search and is frequently full of lies, half truths and major omissions
OBC - Original Birth Certificate - the original paperwork of your birth. Usually has your real birth date, bio mother's name and possibly your original name
PAP/PAPS - prospective adoptive parents
relinquish the act of giving up parental right to your child
relinquished usually used by adoptees and foster children to refer to the time their parent(s) gave up their rights eg. I was relinquished at birth and adopted at 6 months.
Re-homed - when the adoptive parents, for whatever reason, decide they don't want to be parents anymore and pass the kid (for whom they'd promised to provide a "forever home") off to someone else. Adoption's "dirty little secret" that's often done via the internet with minimal formal oversight.
reunion - being in contact with your bio family. Can also be referred to as "being in reunion".
search angel - someone who helps adoptees and birth families connect without charging any frees, they volunteer their time and expertise
search registry - online sites where adoptees and bio families can try to find each other. Most are free, some require a small fee.
